I tend to work in horizontal lines. but here the background and subject matter are all verticals. The negative space is painted a soft green colour, which provides a contrast to the bright white birch trees. The background has a soft-focus watercolour effect, while the trees themselves are highly textured.  These trees do seem to be acting as sentries, protecting the forest beyond.
