This painting was inspired by a sunset which we observed while dining at a waterfront restaurant. The actual location was Prince Edward Island, on Canada's east coast - though this scene could represent anywhere that the sun sets over a body of water. The darker than average sky made the sun itself really pop. The challenge for this piece was to keep the background soft and flowing, while putting the sharp-edged sun front and center. The name of this painting, Mad Orange Sunset, comes from a line of poetry from Jack Kerouac: "Meanwhile the sunsets are mad orange fools raging in the gloom..."
Mixed Media on gallery depth cradled birch panel: acrylic and latex paints, shellac-based spray primer, spray paints, and liquid asphalt (rubberized).
