On one particular midsummer morning, the sky was still dark when I woke up and heard the first bird start to sing. Others joined in, and I watched the stars fade as the light grew. The title of this painting is a line from Leonard Cohen's Anthem: "The birds they sang, at break of day. Start again, I heard them say. Don't dwell on what is passed away, or what is yet to be." Words to live by, from the prophet of our time.
As is often the case, this painting surprised me, by offering connections beyond those I consciously intended. I see the eternal cycle of day and night, and the passage of time. I also see the life force of love, causing the trees to grow, but also causing them to lean into each other.
